A Sequential Collapse
Glazed earthenware ceramic
14 x 70cm
In A Sequential Collapse, Tomlinson continues a series of glazed earthenware ceramics depicting foliage and fire as an open, expandable sequence. The works operate as fragments within an ongoing narrative that can be added to or removed from, rather than a fixed composition.
In this part of the sequence, a cigarette ignites the surrounding foliage, setting off a continuous stream of flame that runs across the elongated ceramic surface. The scene is reduced to a single transitional moment—combustion as a sequence rather than an event—where image and narrative unfold horizontally without resolution. The work extends the logic of Bathers Bathing beyond the figure, retaining its inescapable repetition and endless loop.
